Music at Sangamon Valley
At Sangamon Valley, music is an important part of our educational offerings. From grades K through 5, our elementary students have a music class every day with our general music teachers, Miss Magnusson and Miss Degenhart. In middle and high school, students have the opportunity to study vocal music in Choir with Miss Magnusson and Mr. Gorecki. And starting in 5th grade, students who want to learn an instrument can be a part of our comprehensive eight-year band program under the direction of Mr. Gorecki.
Sangamon Valley schools are home to a comprehensive eight-year band program that aims to train the next generation of instrumental musicians and give students a creative outlet. From the fundamentals in 5th grade to advanced high school concert literature, we are proud of our outstanding student musicians.
Our program starts in 5th grade, where students learn instrument care and fundamentals. Classes meet three times each week (one lesson and two full rehearsals) and students perform in 2-3 concerts each year.
In middle school, we have two bands: 6th grade is our second-year group, and the 7th/8th grade band learns more intermediate concert literature. Each of these groups meets each day during the school day and performs 4 concerts each year. In addition, the 7th/8th grade group performs at the Homecoming halftime show at the high school. During certain years, middle school band members participate in a festival where they combine with other bands and work with a guest conductor.
Our award-winning high school band performs as the Marching Storm in the fall and the Concert Band for the remainder of the school year. The Marching Storm works hard each year and routinely places at area competitions with their outstanding halftime shows. The concert band performs advanced literature at 4 concerts each year, as well as participating in the Macon County and LOVC band festivals. Students are also given the opportunity to perform in Jazz Band, the EIU Honor Band Festival, and IHSA Solo & Ensemble Contest.
Students at SV can join choir at any age from grades 6-12. At the middle school level, students sing in 6th grade choir or 7th/8th grade choir, which perform together at 3 concerts each year and rehearse daily. Middle school choir also travels to Springfield for the Mall Trip in December and St. Louis for the Six Flags trip in the spring.
At the high school level, we offer two choirs. Concert Choir meets daily and students learn vocal fundamentals and good performance practice. Sangamon Valley Voices is an auditioned choral group that prepares mainly popular and jazz music for performances in the community as well as concerts, rehearsing twice each week. Both choirs tour during the holiday season.
