Breakfast in the Classroom


Breakfast in the Classroom has been approved for Sangamon Valley Primary & Intermediate Schools. The program will begin at the start of the 2019-2020 school year.

Why Breakfast in the Classroom

According to many studies, eating breakfast at school helps improve children’s academic performance. Due to bus schedules, student perceptions and location of the cafeteria, many students do not make time to eat breakfast at school. When we move breakfast from the cafeteria into the classroom, more students will participate in breakfast.

Through Breakfast in the Classroom, every student will be able to select a nutritious breakfast to fuel their bodies for a day of learning.  

How Breakfast in the Classroom will operate

  • Breakfast wagons will arrive in the classroom before the morning bell rings  

  • Students that would like a breakfast will select a fruit and/or a juice then a breakfast entree, and if they wish, a carton of milk. They may get all 4 items or just a fruit and/or a juice and an entrée, the milk is not required.

  • Students names will be checked off by the teachers if they ate breakfast and their accounts will be charged accordingly.

    • Due to the Community Eligibility Program (CEP) all students receive 1 FREE reimbursable meal a day.

      • Reimbursable meal= fruit and/or juice and an entrée, milk is optional

  • Clean-up is simple and will be implemented based upon teacher discretion. Many classrooms utilize a “student leader” to assist in collecting garbage, but best practices vary by building and classroom. To assist in the clean-up process, food service will provide the following items and will pick them up outside of the classroom when breakfast is finished.

  • (1) Breakfast specific trash can

  • Classrooms will be provided dust busters to assist as well
