Intermediate & Middle School State Testing

Please review this information with your child to be prepared for testing April 3-12.

IAR Tests

Students are tested in the following areas:

3rd/4th/5th Grade

  • Reading (2 sessions)

  • Math (3 sessions)

6th/7th/8th Grade

  • Reading (2 sessions)

  • Math (3 sessions)

IAR stands for Illinois Assessment of Readiness (formerly known as PARCC)

Intermediate tests will be paper and pencil. Middle school tests will be online.

Test Taking Tips for Parents

  • Make sure your child gets a good night’s rest.

  • Make sure your child eats a good breakfast.

  • Remind your child that this is a good chance to show what they have learned.

  • Help your child arrive to school on time.

  • Avoid scheduling appointments during these weeks.

  • Reassure your child that test scores are only one measure of his or her abilities, not the whole picture.

  • Send your child to school with a positive attitude about the tests.

  • Encourage your child to do his or her best.

Test Taking Tips for Students

  • Relax… take slow, deep breaths.

  • Read directions carefully.

  • Read each question.

  • Read all of the answers before you choose one.

  • Eliminate answers you know are wrong.

  • Look back at the story to help you.

  • Mark answers neatly. If you must erase, erase completely.

  • Check to make sure you’ve answered every question.

  • Read extended response questions before you read the passage.

All students will be rewarded for their hard work on the tests.
