  • Honor Flight for Maynard E. Melhorn
On Thursday, May 12th, Ms. Monica Cummings (2nd grade teacher at SVWE) and her father Maynard E. Melhorn, SP4 were surprised with an all expense paid Honor Flight trip to Washington, D.C.

Ms. Cummings began hosting a Veteran's Day program each November in her classroom many years ago.  This later turned into a school-wide Veteran's Day assembly planned in coordination with Mr. Martin (SVMS history teacher).  In an attempt to return our great gratitude for her efforts to honor the Community and family veterans of her students over the years, the faculty and staff of Sangamon Valley Community Unit School District have arranged for Ms. Cummings to escort her father on the Land of Lincoln Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.  Mr. Maynard E. Melhorn served in the United States Army in Vietnam from 1967-1969.

On May 29, 2004, the World War II Memorial in Washington D.C. was dedicated to the 16.1 million men and women who had served our country during the war, including the 405,000 who gave their lives in the name of freedom.  The mission of the Honor Flight is to provide veterans of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam with a chance to view the National Monuments in Washington, D.C.  As a thank you for his service, and her dedication to teaching us to honor veterans, Mr. Melhorn and Ms. Cummings will take this trip free of charge in the Spring of 2017.  Mr. Melhorn will be one out of over 160,000 veterans to have been gifted this Honor Flight to Washington, D.C.

Mrs. Joan Bortolon, President of the Land of Lincoln Honor Flights was present to award Ms. Cummings and Mr. Melhorn with certificates of appreciation.

  • Sangamon Valley School Board Begins District Goal-Setting
On Saturday, April 9, 2016, the Sangamon Valley School Board hosted a workshop in the high school cafeteria to begin the process of setting district goals and clarifying our direction. Following the Illinois Association of School Boards’ Joint Annual Conference last November, board members Stephanie Guerrero, Martha Leeper, Mike Staab and Superintendent Bob Meadows approached the board about engaging a representative from our IASB division office to conduct a board self-evaluation and then to begin the work of setting goals and clarifying the direction for our district over the next few years.

At the workshop, participants included community members invited by the board, one teacher from each building, a village board member from each of our three towns, a pastor and three recent graduates of Sangamon Valley.  A total of 31 guests were in attendance.  Discussions were held to answer three questions:
    1. What core beliefs and values do I hold about students and learning?
    2. What core beliefs and values do I hold about teachers and teaching?
    3. What core beliefs and values do I hold about the responsibility of the school to the community and the community to the schools?
Over a three hour period, after analyzing strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats relating to each of the questions, much information and insight was shared by this focus group.  The board wishes to thank all who participated in this first step of goal-setting for the district.  They look forward to sharing the end result of this workshop and collaboration with the IASB when complete.

For more information on the district goal-setting, see our Board Meeting Records page.
